Hair Fall

One of the common problems associated with the loss of hair shafts is hairfall
or hair loss as it may be referred to and this is observed having resulted from
one of the following factors;
Some of the causes of hairfall are genetic but there are different levels of
hairfall and different types as well.
Hair fall Causes and Types
- Genetic Factors: Androgenetic Alopecia: Popularly called male and female pattern baldness, which is the biggest cause of hair loss, and it is pre-programmed by genetics and hormones.
- Hormonal Changes: Pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause: Temporary hair loss is a familiar companion with such hormonal changes during certain periods of a woman’s life.
- Thyroid problems: It has been observed that hypothyroidism or low thyroid function can lead to hair loss and the same applies to hyperthyroidism or high levels of thyroid hormones.
- Medical Conditions:
- Alopecia Areata: A type of alopecia that results from the body attacking its own hair follicles or cells.
- Scalp infections: Therefore, you can have ringworm.
- Skin disorders: For instance, psoriasis or seborrheic dermatitis.
- Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy or medications that are often prescribed for cancer tend to deprive a patient of hair.
• Certain medications: A thorough list includes but is not limited to blood pressure drugs, and antidepressants.
• Nutritional Deficiencies: Nutritional deficiencies such as iron, protein, and vitamin A, are among the causes of hair loss. - Telogen Effluvium: This is mainly due to the fact that, high levels of stress are able to force hair follicles into a resting phase, referred to as telogen, creating conspicuous hair loss.
- Hair Treatments and Styling:
• Chemical treatments, tight hairstyles, and heat styling also contribute to hair loss as hair is weakened when it is treated chemically or styled tightly, and heatabilityweakens hair that falls out after being treated. - Other Factors:
1. Aging, hence natural and unavoidable.
2. Smoking: This can pose some danger to hair health.
Types of Hairfall
Androgenetic Alopecia:
Men: Retreating hairline and localized in-front baldness.
Women: Losing within the crown area of the head.
Alopecia Areata: Gradual balding which occurs within a short duration and it usually takes a circular or oval-shaped pattern.
• Telogen Effluvium: Temporary hair loss confined to the scalp, commonly due to high levels of stress or taking a stupid shower.
• Traction Alopecia: which results from tight braiding or ponytails and other hairstyles that continuously exert force on the follicles over time.
• Anagen Effluvium: Hair loss occurring within a shorter period say in half a year because of medical treatments such as chemotherapy.
• Cicatricial (Scarring) Alopecia: Non-cyclic alopecia – hair loss that results in scarring due to disorders such as lichen planus, lupus erythematosus, major infections, or following tight braiding of hair.
This is one of the key reasons that it is so important to understand the root of hairfall so as to properly address the problem. In the case of hair loss, especially major one, one is encouraged to visit the Aesthetic Physician.
